Large Mediterranean style house with foundation already poured and allowance costs set needing Universal Interior Design. Accessibility and maximum function were key needs to allow growth, change and ageing in place while enhancing the architectural style of the structure reflecting a glamorous era and personal desires of the clients.
This area was inspired by the Designers’ extensive travels in Europe, particularly France and Italy. The design of the space speaks to the sun drenched colors of Tuscany with the permanence of hand-worked stone and ‘Old World’ frescos. Sanguine-streaked marble and clear heart maple, hand-forged hardware, and finely executed fixtures combined with the luxury of Universal Design hearken back to a time when the home was unique to its owners’ needs and desires, providing a refuge of comfort and beauty.
Lighting was added for task, ambiance and architectural enhancement. Doorways and corridors were widened to allow wheelchair access including water closet, shower, dressing closet and knee space. Single action faucets, adjustable height shower for sitting or standing, and comfort height toilet with power flush were installed and all walls reinforced for future grab bar needs. Counters height for standing or sitting were combined with concealed pullouts to allow knee space if desired. The dressing closet was designed to allow different levels of accessibility with maximum storage and function in mind. Hardware pulls instead of knobs were installed for ease of use and stone floor surfaces slightly honed for safety. |
