A long narrow room that crowds circulation with seating and has no place for storage of media equipment or display of extensive collections, including books and valued artifacts and objects. One long wall and one short wall are entirely comprised of windows limiting space to hang art. The fireplace and only outlet for television are directly across from each other denying one central focus.
A large floor-to-ceiling built-in, centered on the outer long wall, houses both media and collections and draws the eye away from the overall length of the wall. Sofas placed perpendicular to both long walls allow focus on media or fireplace and break up the long expanse. Windows are enhanced, but not blocked, by sheer shades to draw the outside view into the room, giving the space more depth. Color is added to the walls to shorten their expanse and additional seating is juxtaposed to create private repose apart from the sofas.
The eye is drawn to various parts of the room: centers of walls rather than along their length, with seating, built-ins, corner arrangements and outdoor views. Circulation slows and winds from area to area. The room becomes a series of settings on a path that pauses along the way for visiting, reading, or viewing—the view through the windows serving as much a part of the presentation as the art, artifacts, and collections. |
